Caitlin’s Review:
One of the most important tools a Makeup Artist uses is sufficient light.
While natural daylight is always preferred, it’s not always available. Whether you’re starting at 6am or stuck setting up in a dark hotel room with yellow overhead lights, it can be a pain to do makeup in those settings. There is no woe quite like doing a makeup application in poor lighting, to then see the finished work later once the sun is out, and realize you have gone too light/dark/yellow/ etc. on someone’s foundation.
The obvious solution here is to bring your own light. While the solution is obvious, the options out there can be overwhelming. I used a cheap Amazon light for a while, and it just didn’t cut it. The light panel was a pain to put together and it broke easily. It was flimsy garbage, to be quite honest. I knew if I was going to buy another light it HAD to be something sturdy, easy to set up/break down, and most importantly, give off phenomenal natural-like light.
The Makeup Light was a brand I had seen often fawned over in the professional makeup artist Facebook groups I’m in. I’ll be honest, the price tag kept me from seriously seeking it out for a while. And I’m here to say that with this particular light, you DO get what you pay for (Keep an eye out around Black Friday, I got my light 20% off last year!)
The light is insanely bright at its highest setting, but it can be dimmed down on the button attached to the cord. It gives off a white almost, dare I say, smoothing effect to the clients complexion in photos. It’s subtle, but beautiful. The photos I have taken since buying it have drastically improved. The light alone makes the photos look that much more professional.
The set up and break down of the light is pretty quick, and I love the lock feature on the light panel, so you just KNOW that thing is not budging! I filmed a quick video to show how easily it’s set up, and just how beautiful that light is.
